One Month Old: The “Going Home Outfit”

Family, Photos Add comments

It’s hard to believe that Elsa’s a month old now. Time really flies, especially time in which you’re getting so little sleep and so much of what you’re doing every day is brand new.

Traditionally, when babies leave the hospital, parents put them in some sort of darling “going home outfit.” We planned to do the same, a little pink-and-brown knit number that Lynne bought a few months ago.

Well, now imagine we’re in the hospital getting ready to leave. We’ve never put baby clothes on before, we’ve got this screaming infant we don’t know how to calm, and this knit outfit that fits snugly over her head and has a million snaps and intricate buttons. Suffice to say, we gave up in about 5 seconds and put on the biggest, simplest thing we could find.

A month later, we’re a bit better at putting on the baby clothes, and since Clay and Victoria were coming over to visit, we thought we’d celebrate her one-month birthday by putting on her going-home outfit, one month late.

We took some pictures of her, of course…

Going Home Outfit

Elsa’s great-aunt Jannie sent us a beautiful, personalized cross stich blanket for Elsa with her name and vital statistics on it. We couldn’t resist putting her on top of it and taking a picture for posterity.

Hi Guys, Elsa looks positively beautiful. Quick question– I see that Elsa’a listed birth weight is 8lbs. 13oz. However the picture of her on the scale right after birth shows a weight of 4004 grams, which works out to be 8-15. I see that there is a towel on the scale but they usually have a button to cancel that stuff out before you put the child on. As a concerned uncle I was just wondering if we could get to the bottom of this mystery. Let me know if there is an explanation for this, Thanks and take care.

There is another (previously unseen) photo which sheds some light on this: http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/XKmZKi4vnoL11rl8XM8Iow?authkey=32CTWzyf69I&feat=directlink

This was the weighing picture before they switched it over to grams. I didn’t think the picture was quite as good, so I used the grams one.

But my Windows calculator says that 4004 grams = 8.827 pounds, and .827 of 16 is 13.2, so hopefully the scale got it right.

If not, I bet there’s not an official process for correcting original birth weights… or at least I bet it wouldn’t be fun to try to figure out how to do it.

Hope you and Christy and Amelia can come visit soon!

Oh, one more thing I thought of…

Lynne and I got to play around with Elsa on one of those fancy baby scales for a while when we were waiting for an appointment last week.

They don’t seem to be accurate to more than about 5%… we weighed her several times and got answers that were as much as 2 oz. off each time.

So probably 8-13 is as accurate as 8-15 or even 9. Who knows?

Oh ok. I was under the impression that 28 grams fit precisely into one ounce. I have now discovered that to be not true as 28 grams equals 0.9884 oz. Doing the math that would mean she weighed 8 lbs. and 13.3412 oz. Pretty much exactly as you said. My mistake.

According to M+D, your house is a bit of a heavy construction site at the moment. When things calm down a bit for the three of you this spring we would love to and are planning to visit. Take care and keep the pics coming!
